Company restructuring means more employees will receive notice of layoffs by the end of the month.

COURTESY PHOTO - Nike, Inc. is scheduled to layoff nearly 500 employees by the end of the month. On the heels of laying off 255 employees in July, Nike, Inc. is scheduled to lay off an additional 490 people by the end of September.

On Sept. 1, the state Office of Workforce Investments/Higher Education Coordinating Commission received a notice from Nike of a mass layoff of workers that are not represented by a union.

Marc Bohn, Nike vice president for Total Rewards and Human Resources director, stated in a document dated Aug. 31, that "Over the past five years, employment at Nike in Oregon has grown significantly. Between 2012 and 2017, Nike added approximately 3,800 employees in Oregon."

However, he stated, Nike's shift to a "consumer direct approach" — a marketing stragegy — has resulted in workforce reductions.

"We presently expect that these workforce reductions will be permanent," Bohn added.

Those laid off will be notified and offered severance pay on or about Sept. 30, according to Bohm. Nike will continue to actively recruit for new jobs in the state of Oregon and the Nike facility at 1 Bowerman Drive in Beaverton will remain open.
