Is your loved one prone to falling?
Falling down is a very serious matter for seniors.
According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for people age 65 and older. Falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones, head injuries and fear of activity.
If your aging loved one is wobbly, holding onto walls and furniture - or has actually already fallen - find out more about it. Does he or she feel unsteady? Need new glasses? Have difficulty in dim light? Need grab bars in the bathroom? Feel fearful of activity, even walking?
Are new medications or a new dosage affecting balance or mental sharpness?
Make sure your loved one sees the doctor to find a solution. But don't let the situation linger for long. Falls can happen in an instant, inactivity often follows, then weakness, which can take time to overcome.
