Get in the mood for a “fresh old-fashioned ‘mellerdramer.’”

Corbett Children’s Theater is presenting “The Treasure of Shiver River,” a play by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus, directed by Josiah Green.

The play runs at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, along with a 1 p.m. show Saturday, at the Old Springdale School, CAPS, 32500 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, Corbett.

“(It’s) interactive and encourages the audience to yell at the villain for being evil, as well as cheer for the hero for beating the villain in the end,” Green said.

The play features a cast of 16 with seven crew members from throughout East Multnomah County. Though the cast is filled with new students to the theater, Green said it’s hard to tell who has been around for several years and who is just starting out.

“I am very impressed with these kids and how quickly they’ve picked up acting,” Green said.”

Ying “Sky” Zheng, a Chinese student playing reporter Scoop O’Malley, said she is happy to perform her first play in America and meet new friends. “I’m playing a boy and have a lot of tongue twisters to say,” Zheng said.

The plot centers on a nasty scoundrel, Rod Enreel, who soon will take over the Shiver River Ranch and find the hidden treasure if Colonel Sanders can’t sell his cattle to come up with the mortgage money.

“I want the audience to have a rip roaring time,” said Cedar Mackaness, the actor playing Rod Enreel, whom he called evil and conceited. “My favorite part of this play is the over-exuberance of the acting.”

Heroic Marshal Marshall Law would love to propose to Heidi Claire, the colonel’s daughter, but he can’t. “I’ve never played the confident hero before, so that’s been interesting,” said Josh Layton, who plays the marshal. Heidi, played by Melanie Staffenson, does have the vile option to marry the villain, though he only plans to take off with the treasure and his romance novel-loving partner-in-crime, Paige Turner.

“She thinks she’s God’s gift to the world,” Annie Gorsek said of her character, Paige.

The play also features Lotta Luck, played by Miranda Winters.

A pirate queen, a semi-reformed female gambler and an auctioneer who’s tricked into thinking he’s a dog also await audiences. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for children and seniors, and $2 less for the matinee performance. For more information, call 503-939-3447 or visit corbettchildrenstheater.com.
