Lakeridge buries Raiders in first quarter

Big plays land the Pacers with an early 21-0 lead

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Reynolds running back Jaryll Johnson battles through a crowd to pick up extra yards. Reynolds couldn’t keep pace with the quick strike attack of the Lakeridge Pacers during a 35-18 loss to open the football season Friday night.

The Raiders found themselves down 14-0 with the season barely five minutes old after Lakeridge sophomore Holden Catlett broke a pair of shoulder tackles in the middle of the field on his way to an 84-yard touchdown run. Catlett would strike again on a 44-yard scoring scamper early in the second quarter, shaking loose from a tackle in the backfield and squeezing past three more Raiders along the sideline for a 21-0 lead.

The Raiders tried to answer, but Jary’ll Johnson’s 50-yard catch-and-run touchdown was taken off the scoreboard by a penalty flag, and a high snap killed another Reynolds drive inside the 20-yard line.

Reynolds was poised to get onto the scoreboard after moving inside the Pacers’ 10-yard line midway through the second quarter. But a short pass and a couple runs through the middle barely nudged the ball forward.

The Raiders sent out the field-goal unit on fourth down only to hear a whistle.

Lakeridge called time out.

When the teams returned to the field, Reynolds tossed the kicking tee to the sideline and went in search of the end zone one more time. Senior QB Josh Schleining found it with a quick pass to TreShawn Linne on the right side.

But the Lakeridge offense continued firing on all cylanders with QB Eric Dungey hitting Jack Cole over the middle to convert a 3rd-and-10. Dungey dropped back again and spotted J.R. McLaughlin for a 38-yards scoring strike to put the Pacers in control 28-6 at the break.

The Pacers drove 80 yards in the final two minutes of the half and were on the doorstep of another touchdown only to be turned away when Reynolds forced a fumble at the goal line.
