Combines and dust

Last weekend was a perfect time for the annual Banks Bar-B-Que: No rain, not too hot, and no wild breezes to send the dust flying. The task of raising dust clouds was left to the many drivers who entertained the crowd at the Sunset Park Speedway in Banks by pulling a weighted sled as far as they could in their truck or tractor or engaged in a truck tug-of-war, in which two vehicles tried to overpower each other, often with dramatic, tires-squealing, dirt-spraying results.During Sundays tractor pull event at Sunset Speedway in Banks, the customized Double Shot tractor bounces into the air as it struggles to move a heavy sled.

Organizers estimated that approximately 6,000 people attended the Banks Bar-B-Que, an event that is now in its 69th year. The festivities help to raise funds for maintenance, operations and enhancements at Banks Sunset Park, a private park funded by park activities. The highlight of the weekend, and the community festival’s final event, was the Combine Demolition Derby. On Sunday, Cole Duyck of Banks captured the “Golden Wrench” award as he took first place in the demo derby while driving his “Duyck Dynasty” combine, a John Deere 6600 adorned with corn stalks and duck decoys and emblazoned with slogans such as "Watch your back, Jack!" "It's on like Donkey Kong" and "You can't put a price tag on fun."

Duyck won last year’s competition as well, and organizers said Cole has competed in the event six times, and has won three times overall.

"It's a dynasty going on," commented one impressed spectator.
