Softball: Bulldogs defeat Vikings
The Lady Vikings opened their league play with a 3-1 loss to Willamina on Wednesday, March 5. The game, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed because of soggy field conditions at the baseball diamond, puts Colton at 3-5 overall.
This was a heavy-weight fight between two of the best pitchers in the West Valley league, Coach Jim Brochis said. Becky Patterson and Jill Colbentz. These two players are also teammates during the summer season. The first inning was led off with a homerun by Jill Colbentz and another called homerun (which was actually a ground rule double), but with the umpire in a poor position, I understood the call and agreed to accept his decision. When Becky came back into the dugout, she said sorry, those will be the last runs. I said nothing to be sorry about, good hitters get hits. Becky did not allow another earned run during the remainder of the game. Becky struck out 15 batters and walked only one. Jill struck out eight Colton batters.
We had opportunities to win this game and are disappointed to not pull this off, especially after such a pitching performance, Brochis said. The only hits were by Becky Patterson and Mikaela Shelton. We left the field resolved to continue improving and understand we should have won the game.
This week, the Vikings go on the road to play Corbett on Tuesday in non-league play, and then they jump back into league against Amity on Friday.
