Softball: Little by little

Molalla softball loses 10-0 to seventh-ranked Yamhill-Carlton, but the Indians see where training can take them.

The Molalla Indians caught a glimpse of what training and experience can do for a softball team last week, as they went on the road to face Yamhill-Carlton, the seventh-ranked 4A team in the state. Molalla’s young team lost 10-0, but the goal this year hasn’t been winning—it’s been gaining experience on the field, one game at a time.

“We had zero runs on zero hits and only two errors,” Coach Carol Gruaer said. “So our defense has improved a great deal. Our facing top pitchers, throwing 60 plus, is another story. We are learning and trying and improving, yet it will take time for my team to improve to the [competition] level they are facing and that is understandable.”

“Kaitlyn Burke started on the mound for us and gave up five walks with three scoring. In the third inning we put Karhi Williams on the mound, and she had one walk and one strike out. Kenzi Kluken caught. [Yamhill-Carlton] had 10 runs on nine hits, including a three-run homer, and zero errors, so as one can see they are a very good and experienced team. We were very pleased to only allow 10 runs against such a top team.”

The Indians’ other game last week, which was scheduled for Saturday against Banks, was cancelled due to weather. Grauer said they likely won’t make up that game, as league starts this week.

The Indians faced North Marion on Monday, April 7, and face Estacada on Wednesday, April 9. Both games are away. Their game against Tillamook was rescheduled for Friday, April 9, at 4 p.m., in Molalla.

“We have not won a game, yet the ladies are improving and learning more all the time,” Grauer said. “I am very pleased and know they will get the bats going the more they face better pitchers. Just takes time.”
