Local designers hope to strike a fashionable pose on Rose City runway

by: COURTESY OF PDXLASTNIGHT - Portland Fashion Week draws big crowds for runway shows, and features many designers from the city and their fashions. It'll be April 25 to 27 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.Portland Fashion Week, one of the longest-running fashion weeks in the country, celebrates its 11th year at Veterans Memorial Coliseum with shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening, April 25 to 27, all featuring Pacific Northwest designers.

This is the first year the event will present a spring/summer show. Doors open at 5 p.m. with runway shows starting at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets, starting at $30 (general admission) and available for purchase at http://www.tickettomato.com, include access to more than 40 pop-up shops, a beauty pavilion and red carpet photos.

The first night of runway shows will feature Columbia Sportswear, underU4men, Revolution Couture and O’Pearl Brands. Proceeds go to support Basic Rights Oregon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Oregonians experience equality.

Executive Director Jessica Kane says, “Portland Fashion Week is meant to be a celebration of the Portland community, and that includes everyone who contributes to making Portland who we are.”

Sunday’s runway show will feature the work of 13 up-and-coming student designers and is a collaborative effort between the Art Institute of Portland, Aveda Institute Portland and Dosha Salon and Spa. Kane says the show offers important real-world experience for emerging designers — a rare opportunity in the fashion world — and fosters the creative heartbeat of the city by celebrating young talent.

In keeping with Portland’s commitment to sustainability, Fashion Week embraces sustainable fashion design and offsets its carbon footprint with a carbon mitigation replanting project. The show also features LED lighting, onsite recycling, and a sustainable bamboo runway.
