Portland Classic: The annual LPGA Tour stop has many of the world’s best women golfers back at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. This year, the tournament expands to 72 holes, with the top 70 pros and ties making the 36-hole cut. Today is the first round. Weekly tickets are $25; a one-day ticket is $10, and ages 17 and under are free with a ticketed adult. Parking is $5. (Golf Channel coverage from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.).

Baseball: It’s the final few days of the Class A Northwest League regular season, and the Hillsboro Hops, trying to add a second-half South Division crown to their first-half title, play at the Tri-City Dust Devils, 7:15 p.m., while another South contender, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, are on the road against the Spokane Indians, 6:30 p.m.

Seahawks: Seattle’s final preseason game is at the Oakland Raiders, 7 p.m. (FOX, NFL).

Prep cross-country: Central Catholic and Jesuit run in the Catholic Preview at Fernhill Park.

Friday, Aug. 29

Portland Classic: It’s Round 2 of the LPGA tourney at Columbia Edgewater in Northeast Portland. Proceeds from the $1.3 million event go each year to Portland-area charities. (Golf Channel coverage from 4 to 6:30 p.m.).

College men’s soccer: The University of Portland plays host to the part of annual Nike Portland Invitational. The Pilots welcome Central Florida for a 7 p.m. match, while Oregon State is at home against Evansville, 7:30 p.m.

College women’s soccer: Portland State is at the University of San Francisco Tournament, opening with the host Dons, 7 p.m. ... Saint Mary’s plays UO in the Oregon Nike Tournament, 7 p.m. ... Oregon State kicks off at Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m.

Winterhawks: Portland launches its five-game preseason schedule with three games at Comcast Arena in Everett, Wash., the first at 3 p.m. today vs. Spokane.

College volleyball: The Ducks begin their Oregon Invitational at Matthew Knight Arena with a match vs. Ohio State, 7 p.m. (Pac-12). The tourney begins with Illinois State-Central Arkansas, 4:30 p.m. ... PSU goes up against Washington in the Northwest Challenge hosted by Boise State, 6 p.m. PT. ... Portland Classic: Round 3 of the 72-hole LPGA tournament takes place at Columbia Edgewater. The women’s tour has been to Portland every year since 1972, when the first event had a $25,000 purse. (Golf Channel coverage from 4 to 6:30 p.m.).

College football: Portland State is at Oregon State, 1 p.m. (Pac-12). ... Oregon plays host to South Dakota, 7:30 p.m. (Pac-12).

Timbers: Portland and Vancouver play an MLS match with huge playoff ramifications, since they are the two teams battling most seriously for the fifth and final postseason spot in the Western Conference. Kickoff at BC Place is 7:30 p.m. (KPDX 13).

Oregon sports history

Tom Watson sinks a 4-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win the Jeld-Wen Tradition by one stroke over Tom Kite, Gil Morgan and Jim Ahern at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha. Watson earns $330,000 for capturing one of the Champions Tour majors. It’s the first of four years the tourney will be at The Reserve. From 2007-10, the Tradition will be at Crosswater at Sunriver.
