Crackdown on abondoned homes approved by City Council last year paying off, although foreclosure referrals have dropped

The July 17 auction was set as part of a crackdown on abandoned properties approved by the City Council last year.

Two boarded-up houses had been scheduled for sale.

The liens at a house 15803 S.E. Powell Blvd. totalled $111,916. It was sold by U.S. Bank.

The liens at a house at 13409 S.E. Harold St. amounted to $37,627. It is owned by a private party.

Since former Mayor Charlie Hales first prioritized cracking down on them them last July, 57 properties have been submitted to the City Auditor's Office to begin the foreclosure process. since then, 26 — or 46 percent — have been resolved, with the city recovering $2.6 million in fees and fines.

But the number of homes submitted to the council for foreclosure has slowed down. Although city officials originally anticipated submitting lists to the council three or four times a year, none have been submitted so far in 2017.
