Sherwood Walmart to open Aug. 13

The 149,000-square-foot store will not be open 24 hours

The store will open bright and early Aug. 13.Scot Gavic, manager of the new Sherwood Walmart Supercenter, was more than a little excited to show off his store during a recent tour of the 149,000-square-foot complex Tuesday.

Gavic, who spent 18 years overseeing the Walmart Supercenter in Woodburn, said he’s been receiving nothing but support from many in the community in anticipation of the store’s Aug. 13 opening.

That represents a marked change from a little more than a year ago when many Sherwood residents packed the chambers of the Sherwood City Council to voice objections about the coming of the nationwide retailer. While one of those concerns had been over the possibility the business would remain open 24 hours a day, that will not be the case, Gavic said, noting the store will have hours similar to other Walmart stores.

On Tuesday, several media outlets were given tours of the new store, which is in the process of bringing in merchandise and finishing off the new store on the corner of Tualatin-Sherwood Road and Langer Farms Parkway.

“This is going to be a wonderful store,” said Gavic. “I’m really impressed with the people of this town.”

Gavic said five semi-trailer truckloads of merchandise were unloaded on Tuesday alone.

While still massive, Gavic said the Sherwood store is slightly smaller than the Woodburn store (which encompasses about 205,000 square feet) but is bigger than the planned Tigard store.

In the grocery section of his new store Gavic said highlights will include a selection of craft beers, a section of gluten-free products and a focus on local products.

“We’re trying to push as much local as we can,” said Gavic.

Currently, the Sherwood store is in the process of wrapping up the hiring of about 300 employees, needing only another 60 to 70 employees to complete that number.

“Most of them are full time,” Gavic said, noting they are taking applications both online and at the store. “

Among those who will be part of the new store is Donna Deines, who will serve as deli manager.

Gavic called Deines, who is the author of two children’s books, one of his “supreme catches.”

“I can’t wait until we open up,” said Deines, whose former careers include spending 23 years in the U.S. military and five years working in federal corrections in Arizona. “I love people. I love customers.”

The store’s other features will include:

— A small in store Subway restaurant and bank.

— An automatic light dimming system that’s dependent on how bright it is outside.

— The first double-wide drive-through pharmacy in the state. Pneumatic tubes, similar to those found at drive-through banking lanes, will move prescriptions to customers in the far lane, according to Shazia Zafar, Sherwood Walmart store pharmacy manager.

Zafar worked for 12 years in the pharmacy at the Sherwood Safeway store.

“I’m looking forward to reengaging with the community,” she said.

Gavic said the local store has already been active in the community, having been a sponsor of several events include Cruisin’ Sherwood, the Robinhood Festival and Music on the Green. In addition, Walmart has donated $12,000 in school supplies to the Sherwood School District.

Meanwhile, Gavic said he plans to continue his other job as lead singer for the band 99W (formerly the Adjusted Nutz). The Tualatin-based, four-piece cover band performs hits made popular by Tommy James, Elvis Presley, Duran Duran, Wilson Picket and others.

“It’s a hobby for us,” said Gavic. “Hopefully I’m going to play at the store for the associates.”

A 15-year Tualatin resident, Gavic said he’s anxiously eagerly awaiting the store’s Aug. 13 grand opening ceremony at 7:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting to follow at 8 a.m. (the same time the store opens).

“I can’t wait. I’m excited about it.”
