KORT CHIROPRACTIC AND CONCUSSION CARE - Russell J. Kort, D.C.In recent articles, I have written about concussions and the effects they have on the brain.

Balance issues are common side effects of a concussion. These symptoms are most noticeable when our eyes are closed. Think about it. How often do you blink per day? The average is 28,800 times. However, if you are experiencing sensitivity to light or sound, that number could be much higher.

Balance is the key to life, and if your balance is altered with every blink of your eyes, your quality of life will be compromised. Falls are one of the top five causes of death of people over 50.

Most of us take balance for granted. Imagine for a second if every time you blink you thought you were falling. Do you think the muscles of your neck and back will be loose and relaxed? NOT A CHANCE!

People with balance issues are plagued with neck and back issues. This is because the brain is working constantly to stabilize them against the ravages of gravity.

If the source of the problem is not addressed, then the problem will never go away.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we have unique and proven solutions for balance and other brain and spinal issues.

Dr. Kort is the pioneering physician utilizing Acoustic Brain Body Exercise as a fundamental treatment program to improve and enhance the lives of those we touch.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - Dr. C. Todd WilsonAs time passes, as a society, we are placing more and more value on having straight, cosmetically ideal teeth. That is not a bad thing for sure. It is definitely more the norm than the exception to have braces now.

In the not-far-distant past, your dentist was more likely to dismiss your orthodontic needs as “cosmetic” or “optional.” I treat a lot of adult patients who were told they did not need braces as kids. In more recent times, dentists are much more aware of the long-term benefits of having orthodontic treatment and are much more likely to recommend it.

But what exactly is the benefit? Is it just about having straight teeth?

Definitely not. In fact, I recommend treatment for primarily bite-related, or functional reasons. Cosmetics are sort of a side effect, if you will, of having the teeth aligned in the proper bite position.

An orthodontist is trained to place your teeth in proper position in the bite, down to fractions of a millimeter. This is important as the enamel of your teeth, though super-strong, is weaker under certain types of forces. In general, having a proper bite will lead to less wear on your teeth, less dental work over time, less tendency for periodontal disease and healthier jaw joints.

Is it OK to want braces just to get your teeth straight? Sure! But be sure to also consider the health benefits to your teeth and jaw structures.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - C. Todd Wilson, DDSAs we approach Thanksgiving each year I, like many of you, take time to reflect on what I’m thankful for.

First, I am thankful for all of you who have been a part of my practice family over the past 15 years. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to provide orthodontic care for you. I take great pride in what I do, and it’s very gratifying to see all of those beautiful smiles out in the community.

My gratitude for this opportunity motivates me to continue to give back to the community by sponsoring community events, school fundraisers, athletics, the arts, and the list goes on.

Second, it is extremely important to me that you have a positive experience as members of my practice family. This is an area I understand can always be improved upon, and we constantly strive to do better.

It stands to reason that a practice that has focused on providing excellent care and treating people with kindness and respect would get very busy over time. This presents ongoing challenges.

I want to make sure that we are always meeting your expectations in this regard, so I encourage honest and ongoing feedback. I don’t take it lightly that you have choices as to providers. My goal is to provide the best possible care with the best possible outcome in every situation.

Thanks again to all of you. At the end of the day, for me, it’s about treating others as I want to be treated.

KORT CHIROPRACTIC AND CONCUSSION CARE - Russell J. Kort, DCMy first career as an EMT-I on a paramedic unit helped me understand and evaluate injuries associated with auto collisions – an invaluable skill in my chiropractic career.

When you are involved in a collision, there are many forces exerted on your body. Forces such as seatbelts, air bags and other impacts to your car play a role in stopping your movement and creating injuries to you and your passengers.

Did you know that 17 percent of all concussions (TBIs) are the result of car accidents? We know that and therefore evaluate all MVA patients for concussions.

Many people involved in collisions are more concerned about the damage to their cars than damage to themselves.

STOP! Your vehicle saved your life. It did not prevent you from being injured. Urgent Care checks to see if you have any life-threatening injuries.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we look past the obvious. We examine all aspects of your brain and body. With this information, we develop a comprehensive brain-body program to get you back on track.

The best part is, you’re covered by Oregon law for your care following a collision. This means your insurance company cannot tell you who you can see for treatment. In most cases, there are no out-of-pocket expenses to you and your occupants.

You owe it to yourself and your passengers to seek care from a physician who looks past the obvious.

It is this attention to detail that sets Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care apart from the rest.

NEW SMILES DENTAL - Nathan Doyel, Benjamin Aanderud, Richard McKinneyDo you have headaches or grind your teeth at night?

A night guard is a great solution to those problems. But beware! Not all guards are created equal.

Mouth guards at department or sporting goods stores are primarily used and recommended during sports to protect the teeth from major injury. Softened in hot water at home, boil-and-bite mouth protectors are made from thermoplastic material and are then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth. Because they are not designed for night use or to prevent grinding, they could do more harm than good.

Custom-fabricated mouth guards, called night guard appliances, are primarily worn at night. They are individually designed and prevent damage to teeth due to grinding and clinching, which many patients don’t even realize they do. Through an examination, our dentists will be able to diagnose whether a night guard would be beneficial by discussing your symptoms, such as sensitive teeth, headaches, jaw tightness and jaw popping or clicking and by noting if your teeth show wear patterns or signs of fracturing.

Night guards can help relax the muscles and stop costly damage to your teeth and jaw. An effective night guard should be comfortable, durable, easy to clean, and should not restrict breathing. The process is simple and takes a few minutes at two short visits.

Give us a call to find out more. Let’s lessen your pain, protect your teeth and help you get a better night’s sleep!

KORT CHIROPRACTIC AND CONCUSSION CARE - Russell J. Kort, D.C.Soccer season is here – and with it, the risk of injury and concussions.

Soccer is a great sport and part of the game is the HEADER. Recently, I listened to an interview of a professional women’s soccer player. She was discussing how to head the ball safely. I don’t agree with this concept. Make no mistake, it is repetitive impacts over time that cause CTE or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

The fact is this, the brain floats in fluid. Sometimes the brain hits the inside of the skull. It is this movement and contact within the skull that causes damage to the child’s brain.

The U.S. Soccer Federation implemented new guidelines in January 2016 that eliminate heading for children under 10 years of age and limit the amount of heading in practice for children 11 to 13 years of age.

Many parents of kids suffering from concussion presume their symptoms will go away. Unfortunately, months and even years later, some still experienced symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, depression, anxiety, irritability, memory loss, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and sensitivity to light and noise.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care we look at all aspects of concussion. A comprehensive exam, customized treatment plans, and brain based therapeutic exercise programs are the the basics in our treatment and your recovery.

Your child’s brain is still developing. An injury to it now may have lifelong consequences.

Call today for your complementary consultation to see if we are a good fit.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - C. Todd Wilson, DDSWant to earn some extra cash this Halloween? Trick-or-Treating can be more than just fun, there is an opportunity to earn some dollars!

This year marks Wilson Orthodontics’ 15th Annual Halloween Candy Buyback. The program consists of paying kids $1 per pound of Halloween candy they surrender to our office. The goal, of course, is to provide incentive for kids to eat less candy, while still allowing them to enjoy Trick-or-Treating.

We are also sponsoring the program in conjunction with local schools to collect candy as a fundraising activity. Last year we returned over $8,000 to local schools through this program. The schools that bring in the most candy receive a bonus over and above the candy they bring in.

Last year we collected over 2,000 pounds of candy. How much candy is that, you ask? That is enough to fill your bedroom floor-to-ceiling with boxes of candy.

What do we do with all that candy? Does Dr. Wilson eat it? No (well ok, some). We in turn donate the candy to various local charities that can benefit from it. St. Vincent DePaul, a local food bank, gets much of it. We also donate some to the Easter Egg Hunt for Hope. Some goes to Boy Scout fundraising.

Every year we also ship candy overseas to our U.S. military personnel. It has been rewarding to receive letters and thank you notes from our troops who appreciate the gesture.

Check our website smilebywilson.com for times you can bring in your candy!

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - C. Scott Wilson, DDSRemember wooden nickels? Your parents definitely do.

Back in the day, when you went to your orthodontist you got wooden nickels as a reward for brushing well. You may have kept them under your bed, or in a box in the garage. Some of you might still have some! You could cash them in for (cheesy) prizes at your dentist’s office.

The main point of such programs is to give kids incentive to brush well, to wear their elastics and follow other protocols during orthodontic treatment. This promotes good oral health, which in turn leads to fewer cavities and less time in braces.

Today, like everything else, our Rewards Program has gone digital. Patients are issued a rewards card at their new patient exam. Points go on the card electronically. You can earn points by being on time for your appointment, practicing great dental hygiene, or just by being a great patient. You can go online at any time and check your point totals.

When it’s time to cash in your points, you simply go online. You can select gift cards from over 200 different stores, like Target, Best Buy and Apple iTunes. Point and click, and the cards are delivered right to your mailbox. No more rubber dinosaurs and plastic parachute men.

Another exciting aspect of our Rewards Program is that you can get points for things totally unrelated to your teeth. This includes things like getting straight A’s, community service, and celebrating personal achievements. Sign up today!

NEW SMILES DENTAL - Dentists Nathan Doyel, Benjamin Aanderud and Richard McKinney.Recent news articles have trumpeted a shocking discovery: You don’t need to floss!

On a tip from his son’s orthodontist, a reporter for the Associated Press filed a Freedom Of Information Act request for research on flossing’s benefits.

When the request turned up only poor-quality studies, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services quietly dropped the recommendation to floss in the latest edition of their Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Many news organizations have taken this to mean that there’s no reason to floss. But as anyone who has ever had a piece of corn stuck in their front teeth knows, you don’t need a study to tell you that flossing is very good for you.

Aside from the fact that having food stuck between your teeth is uncomfortable and unsightly, leaving food fragments wedged against your gums can encourage bacterial growth.

Bacteria can cause tooth decay, gum disease and other problems; infections in your mouth can spread to other parts of the body.

Gum disease is a very, very common problem. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that almost half of all Americans suffer from some form of periodontal disease. For Americans over 65, that number rises to over 70 percent.

If the studies to back up flossing are of poor quality, perhaps that’s a sign that more and better studies need to be done. It’s not a sign that you can stop flossing! There is just no good reason to stop using such a simple, affordable, effective tool to help keep your gums and teeth healthy.
