KORT CHIROPRACTIC - Russell J. Kort, D.C.Football season is here — and with it comes hard hits and the potential for concussions or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI).

Each year, there are more than 10,000 high-school football players who suffer concussions. In fact, 47 percent of all concussions recorded in high school stem from football alone. Other sports that are commonly associated with MTBI are soccer, lacrosse and cheerleading.

Many of my MTBI patients presumed their symptoms would naturally go away. Unfortunately, months and even years later, some still experienced or just began to recognize signs of damage such as headaches, dizziness, depression, anxiety, irritability, memory loss, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and sensitivity to light and noise.

It is a fact that children take longer to heal from a head injury than adults; therefore, it’s crucial to begin rehabilitation sooner than later. We create an individualized treatment program to maximize potential healing.

Not all concussions occur on the field.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we have successfully treated children and adults who have fallen from horses, slipped on the ice, fallen out of bed, had chairs pulled out from under them, fallen on the playground, or been hit in the head by a ball.

The point is, concussions can happen to anyone at any time.

You don’t have to “learn to live” with debilitating concussion symptoms. Seek treatment as soon as possible.

NEW SMILES DENTAL - Nathan Doyel, DMD; Benjamin Aanderud, DMD; and Richard McKinney, DMD.When a patient has a badly decayed or fractured tooth, a crown may be needed. A crown— made of porcelain, ceramic or gold — covers the tooth and restores it to its original shape and size.

For decades, having a crown placed on a tooth has been a multi-appointment process. On the first visit, the tooth is prepared, an impression of it is made and sent it to an off-site lab to create the crown. The patient receives a temporary crown, then about two weeks later would receive the permanent crown.

Now there’s an option called CEREC same-day crowns.

With modern technology, the tooth can be scanned and sent to our in-office milling machines, which create beautiful, ceramic works of art. The crown is then bonded onto the prepared surface of the tooth the same day.

The CEREC System (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a multi-instrument system that allow our dentists to create and place custom-fit ceramic restorations in only one dental visit.

During your appointment at New Smiles, one of our dentists will prepare the tooth and design the restoration using the on-site CEREC technology. With the high-tech system, the crown is created in less than 30 minutes, then placed into the patient’s mouth. The entire appointment lasts between 1-2 hours.

CEREC is not available in every dental office, so give New Smiles a call to learn more about same-day crowns. Find out how we can restore your smile quickly — with beautiful and lasting results.

Change your smile, change your life!

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - C. Todd Wilson, DDSDo I have to wear retainers after braces? Yes. Everyone does. Otherwise, no matter how good your orthodontist did, your teeth will shift.

How long do I have to keep wearing my retainers? No matter how long ago your braces came off, you cannot ever completely stop wearing retainers. If you stop at any time, you should expect some shifting of your teeth.

Which retainer is best for me? There are many options, and your orthodontist can help you determine which is best for you based on your specific correction, age and lifestyle.

Can my wisdom teeth cause my teeth to shift after braces? No. Studies show that your wisdom teeth can’t produce enough force to move your other teeth.

What’s new with retainers? Digital technology. We offer digital models of your teeth in their final perfect position after the braces are removed. This means no matter where you are in the world in the future, you can simply call us and we can 3D print a model of your teeth, make you a new retainer, and send it to you. You no longer have to come into the office for impressions.

When we remove your braces, we begin the retention phase of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a lifetime. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.

KORT CHIROPRACTIC - Dr. Russell KortSummer is here and Fall Football Season is just around the corner. If you are a coach or a parent you are already thinking about the summer practice schedule.

Contact sports are exciting to watch and play. However, when there is an injury to the brain, parents and coaches must take notice.

The current standard for concussion testing is called ImPACT. It tests neurocognitive function. This test is done on a computer. It measures Verbal, Visual Memory, Processing Speed and Simple Reaction Time.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care we utilize C3 Logix. This is a Dynamic Interactive Test that quantitatively measures ALL of the above and Precision Touch Reaction Time, Simple and Choice Reaction Time, 4 Cognitive Reaction tests, 6 Individual Balance tests, Progressive Visual Acuity tests combined with Metronomic Vestibular Ocular Movement.

If this sounds comprehensive it is. This test was developed by the Cleveland Clinic for Traumatic Brain Injuries. It is the Gold Standard in affordable concussion evaluation.

Let’s face it, injuries to a child’s brain are very SERIOUS. Their brains are growing and continuing to develop. An injury now may have profound effects on their ability to function later.

Baseline concussion testing gives you and your athlete peace of mind. Know before you go…onto the field, the ice or the court.

SPECIAL: The first 10 readers who mention this article will receive a Baseline Concussion Evaluation for $39 (that’s over 50% off).

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - Dr. Todd WilsonIf you want to play like the pros, you need to wear the same specialized equipment that keeps professional athletes safe and performing at their peak.

But here’s a hint—I’m not talking about their shoes or jerseys. I’m talking about mouthguards.

That’s why Wilson Orthodontics has provided free custom mouthguards to student athletes for the past 14 years. This year, we’ll distribute roughly 500 protectors to football and lacrosse athletes in Sherwood, Newberg and the surrounding communities.

But mouthguards are important for athletes in every sport. So here’s a breakdown that will help you choose the best option.

Ready Made. A ready made (or “stock”) mouthguard is fine, especially if practice is in 20 minutes. But they’re the least safe, least effective and least preferred option. In your mouth, one size really doesn’t fit all.

Mouth Formed. “Boil and bite” mouthguards are probably the most common out there. When heated in boiling water, they become pliable, allowing you to bite down and mold them. Unfortunately, the process isn’t perfect, and these still tend to shift during play.

Custom Made. Hands down, this is the best option. At Wilson Orthodontics, we can make a custom molded mouthguard, and can tailor your mouthguard to your dental history and chosen sport. These are the safest option, and it’s what the pros use too.

NEW SMILES - FROM LEFT: Dr. Doyel, Dr. Aanderud and Dr. McKinney. At New Smiles, our DEKA CO2 laser can be used to treat everything from cold sores to periodontal disease to plastic surgery of the gums.

Here’s how it works. By using a low energy level, the laser can be used to gently stop a cold sore in its tracks before it becomes an ugly, embarrassing distraction.

The DEKA CO2 laser is also great at treating periodontal (gum) disease and gingivitis. By applying the laser to deep pockets it has been shown to decrease these pockets and improve the overall health of the gums and bone.

By increasing the energy level, our laser can be used to sculpt the gum line around short looking teeth creating a natural, beautiful smile. So if you have ever felt you have a “gummy smile” we may have the solution for you!

So remember, the next time you feel that tingle on your lip don’t hesitate to call New Smiles. The procedure only takes about five minutes and will give you the confidence and satisfaction knowing that you eliminated that ugly cold sore before anyone ever noticed.

“Change your smile, change your life.”

NEW SMILES - From Left: Dr. Doyel, Dr. Aanderud and Dr. McKinney. The end of the school year is upon us, and for high school juniors, seniors and college-bound freshmen, there’s no better time to schedule a wisdom teeth extraction.

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars on each side of the jaw; they typically develop between the ages of 16 to 21.

While some wisdom teeth grow in straight naturally, it is fairly common for these teeth to appear disordered, with teeth jutting out at uncomfortable angles. These pearly latecomers also tend to crowd out existing teeth, damaging their neighbors, the jawbone and nearby nerve endings.

Another possibility is for the wisdom teeth to become “impacted,” meaning that they fail to break through the gums or only partially pierce the skin layer. These openings are ripe for cavities and infection, especially because their awkward placement makes brushing and flossing impacted teeth difficult.

But while the consequences of unremoved wisdom teeth can be quite painful, extracting these teeth is a safe and routine dental procedure that takes a few hours or less. At New Smiles, we use a local or general anesthetic to make the surgery breeze past. The recovery period is generally takes a few days.

New Smiles is Sherwood’s No. 1 choice for excellence in cosmetic dentistry and beyond. Schedule an appointment today to learn if you or your teenage child is a good candidate for wisdom teeth extraction.

Brought to you by Dr. Scott Johnson - Oregon Hearing Solutions - HEARING CARE INSIDER -

OREGON HEARING SOLUTIONS - Dr. Scott JohnsonThe repercussions of poor decision-making reverberate far longer than our actions. This can be especially hard for younger folks to understand.

This message hits home after learning that Brian Johnson, lead singer of iconic rock-and-roll group AC/DC, can no longer perform with his band.

Johnson recently told CNN that he risked “total deafness” if he continued to perform in large stadiums and arenas. In a statement, he said that he already has difficulty hearing the guitars and other musicians on stage.

Johnson called his new diagnosis his “darkest day.” It’s a poignant reminder that we often don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone.

The culprit? Sensorineural hearing loss. Damage to the inner ear caused by overexposure to loud noises is usually permanent and cannot be repaired, either by surgery or medication. But, like all forms of noise-induced hearing loss, it is entirely preventable.

Preventing sensorineural hearing loss costs as little as a pair of foam ear plugs. If you or a loved one are routinely exposed to constant loud noise over 85 decibels (about as loud as a vacuum cleaner), make sure to dampen those sounds or leave the area.

The good news? If you have already been diagnosed or suspect you may suffer from noise-induced hearing loss, there are excellent options and technology available to help you regain the sounds you’ve been missing. Give us a call to learn more about sensorineural hearing loss, how it can be prevented, or what to do after being diagnosed.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - Dr. Todd WilsonHave you heard about the latest DIY (do it yourself) trend? It’s dangerous, foolhardy—and completely legal.

It’s hard to believe, but according to this consumer alert put out by the American Association of Orthodontists, some people are starting to use DIY methods to self treat their crooked or gap teeth.

A quick search online pulls up hundreds of references to these so-called “quick fix” projects. Some of these solutions use things like rubber bands or dental floss, but the most outrageous involve constructing faux braces out of paper clips, or a retainer out of modeling clay.

Folks, this is crazy. You can cause extensive (and very expensive) damage to your teeth, bone and soft tissue by messing around with dental experiments.

Why? Well, for starters, orthodontists don’t just align your teeth based on aesthetics. In fact, the functionality and long-term health of your teeth is our primary concern; style always comes second. Trying to self treat misaligned teeth could very easily result in loss of the supporting tooth root, gum recession or, in the worst case, loss of teeth altogether.

Moreover, orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists with over 10 years of rigorous education. We’re professional, reliable and safe.

So take it from me: don’t experiment on your teeth. You get what you pay for, and without the help of a dental professional, you could be causing your teeth serious (if not irreparable) harm.

KORT CHIROPRACTIC - Dr. Russell KortDuring my last Insider article, I spoke of the importance of BALANCE.

I am reminded of my message as I write this. Recently we had a good friend lose her balance while walking through a store. She fell backwards and hit her head on the floor. She passed away three days later.

Our balance system begins to break down as we age. We can speed up this process by eating, drinking and breathing TOXIC substances, and ignoring past traumas.

Concussions recent and long since forgotten have a profound effect on our balance as we get older.

Degenerative diseases like diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s all cause the breakdown of these critical areas of the brain that control our BALANCE.

Balance issues manifest slowly over time. Some symptoms are obvious, like bumping into walls or tipping over when you are tying your shoes. Other symptoms are less noticeable. Symptoms may include a CHRONIC stiff neck or back—or FATIGUE when watching TV, playing with electronics or reading. Irritability, frustration and memory loss can all be symptoms of a declining vestibular system.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we address the source of your balance issues by measuring the dysfunction, treating you appropriately and re-measuring for improved results.

BETTER BALANCE, BETTER FUNCTION, BETTER LIFE.
