Scholarship honors those who ‘beat the odds’

Students who have faced daunting obstacles and will graduate high school in June 2015 are eligible to apply for a special scholarship. The Best the Odds scholarship is designed to recognize students who have succeeded academically in spite of challenges such as poverty, disability, homelessness and personal tragedy and who plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college.

Three scholarships worth $2,500 will be awarded in November for the 2015-16 academic year. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years provided the recipient maintains a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and remains a full-time student. Applications are open and available online at stand.org/Oregon/beat-the-odds/apply.

Learn about online schooling

The state’s largest tuition-free online charter school, Oregon Connections Academy, will host a free parent meeting in Lake Oswego at 6 p.m. August 5 for families interested in exploring online learning. A Portland parent will host the event at Starbucks, 8 Centerpointe Drive. Parents will have the opportunity to meet parents of currently enrolled Oregon Connections Academy students, to learn about the school’s curriculum and to explore the program.

The school also offers real-time interactive online sessions with school representatives. Visit the school’s website at oregonconnectionsacademy.com or call 800-382-6010 to learn more.
